Principal’s Message

Welcome to Salmon Arm West Elementary School!

Salmon Arm West Elementary is an amazing place to learn. We are a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school that prides itself on working with our school community to develop respectful and responsible citizens. We are committed to maintaining an enriching and safe learning environment for all of our students and staff.

We have an active PAC, with whom the school works closely to develop and implement on-going activities, supports and programs to enhance the education of our students. As always, you are free to ask your child’s teacher, the Principal, our secretary or a PAC executive member if you have questions about the school and community.

Throughout the school year, we offer opportunities for our students to try a variety of activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, swimming, basketball clubs, track and field, lunch club, art club, and so much more. We offer a breakfast program (donations gratefully accepted!) and have a volunteer based one-to-one reading program. We are very fortunate for the incredible four seasons we experience here in the Shuswap, which allow us to offer a variety of learning activities, cultural celebrations and events related to the seasons.

Salmon Arm West prides itself on taking the learning outdoors and honouring the land. We are very fortunate to have the ‘Shannon Sharpe Learning Circle’, an outdoor space where students, staff and community members gather regularly to share knowledge, stories and meals. The Shannon Sharpe Sharing Circle symbolizes connections to the former teacher’s Métis and Secwe̓pemc heritage, and the design of the structure reflects Indigenous traditions. Recently, Salmon Arm West School’s community planted trees to honour the lives of the children whose bodies were discovered in the grounds of the Kamloops Residential School. We are dedicated to providing equal opportunities for all of our students, as part of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. We welcome all of our families to take part in our journey.

Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment, where all students are free to learn, grow and pursue their personal best.
