Principal’s Message

Dear SAW Families,

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the summer break with some local travel and exploration. The staff here at Salmon Arm West are very excited to welcome everyone back to school on September 10, 2020.  This will be a full day of school, starting at 8:20 a.m. and dismissing at 2:22 p.m.

If your child is entering school for the first time, welcome to Salmon Arm West!  Kindergarten students will be doing a gradual entry that will also be starting on September 10, 2020.  Please contact the school if you do not yet have a meeting time with Mrs. Sutherland.

The Ministry of Education recently announced that elementary schools will be organized around cohort sizes of 60 students.  What does this mean?  It means that your child will only interact with 59 others during any school day.  For Salmon Arm West, two to three classes will comprise a single cohort and function largely as its own ‘school’.  This may mean changes to the school day, such as staggered or alternate play times during recess and lunch.  In addition to regular classroom instruction, cohort classes will also be doing more outdoor learning to provide for space and fresh air.  We are currently working on these ideas and others to allow us to organize around this cohort concept and limit contact during the day.

We are also developing a thorough safety plan to ensure the safest environment possible for all staff and students.  During the first few days of school, everyone will be learning about distancing, regular hand washing/sanitizing, and other health and safety protocols that will help protect ourselves and others.

Regular and timely communication with you is now more important than ever.  Please continue to watch your emails and check the website for updated information regarding the start of school.

Salmon Arm West is an amazing school with a very caring and dedicated staff.  So, while this school year may look different from any other, it does not mean we cannot learn and have fun.  We are committed to the success of your child and every student in our building.

We are in this together.
